This "list" ended up becoming the inspiration for this collaborative web site. Years ago, as an amusement, I began this complication (not ranking) of unique, outstanding, highly memorable or influential performances by individual musicians or in some cases mainstream groups.
Over the years it expanded and is what you see here. Feel free to comment, better yet, create your own that spans the 1980s-1990s!
As much as you might imagine Eric Clapton would figure into a discussion like this he was not really top of mind.
I wonder about the drumming section, it seems like I have a few players who crossed over from a jazz type background into rock. I have a feeling I am missing something here.
As much as I love acoustic guitar I feel like this section is somewhat under represented. I think the acoustic guitar is ubiquitous in rock and roll and it’s just hard for me to pin down many breakthrough performances.
It seems like Metal is pretty much left out here, not sure if that’s right or not. A little help here?
The Live section might be missing something, not sure what that might be.
I’m sure the Harmonica and Supporting Vocal sections are missing a thing or two.
One of the faults of this was getting stuck in the thought process and thinking about Artists and trying to plug them in, as if somehow they deserve to appear, but not sure where. Like The Band. And what about Janice Joplin and Elton John?
I read once that Jimi Hendrix was an avid listener of all music and that he knew of all the relevant performances on record; a serious student of the craft. I think this list is in need of that kind of expertise.
What I tried to refrain from doing was consulting existing lists. I don’t want to rely on other sources like that, I’d rather tap in to my own sources, mainly you!
